PLANNERS COMMENTS

On receipt of the new map produced by Bob Teed and from my previous recollections of the area my aim was to produce technical courses utilising the more complex areas and avoid as much as possible the more physical areas such as the steep escarpment to the East, especially as I wasn't 100% healthy at the time. With numerous paths on the area I also tried to plan courses such that path runs would not be the obvious and quickest route choice.  Hopefully I was successful in these aims and in utilising the best parts of the area.  From comments received many found the courses mentally challenging.  The Brown course was shorter than normal and about right though elsewhere perhaps the green could have been a bit shorter though conditions may have had a bearing on this.   Previous recollections of the area were also obviously in peoples minds as many ran down on the Light Green with the result it was over subscribed.

With heavy snow in two of the three days previous to the event there were fears that we may have to cancel but on the day we were surprised to find most of the white stuff gone which was a relief after having to trudge through a few inches of it the previous day.

Thanks to Jane for assisting in planning / nursing me through my illness - she also planned the Orange and Yellow courses,  Peter Nicholson for Controlling, Nick for organising,  Mike & John for assisting with Control collection after the event, Bob for the map and Pete C. for returning to the area Monday to seek out 2 vandalised controls which he eventually located in the undergrowth.

Organisers comments -

The current fasion is to have preprinted maps for colour coded events. This is OK if competitors behave themselves and enter courses in similar proportions to previous events. Unfortunalty at Draethen many people ran down a course and we ran out of pre-printed blue & lt green. We thought we were on top of it and were giving runners hand marked maps to take with them to the start when they registered. Unfortunately a couple of people early on had been registered as green but ran light green which resulted in  the start running out of light green maps for a while and one competitor not being able to run the course she wanted; for which we offer our sincere appologies. Appart from that and a few behind the scenes SI crises the event ran OK. 2 controls on the yellow course dissapeared but were found the next day.

Thanks to those SWOC members who helped.
